Teaching procedures:

Step 1 lead-in

Question: What do you know about the UN?

To introduce the UN by means of pictures and presentation.

Step 2. Pre-reading

Reading strategy: understanding a speaker’s attitude

For: by speaking in an enthusiastic manner

by using positive adjectives

by stressing the positive aspects of the topic

Against: by using negative adjectives

Step 3 While-reading

1 Fast reading: Skimming to get general ideas

2.      Part A

*  Who is Tang Ning?

*  How many countries belong to the UN?

3.      Read the text carefully and divide the text into three parts.

Part 1 paras 1-3 Brief introduction of the UN

Part 2 paras 4-5 Working as a UN Goodwill Ambassador

Part 3 para 6 The problems the UN helps solveand its goals to achieve by 2015

2        Careful reading:

1)      Read the first two paragraphs and try to fill in as much information as you can.

Step 4 Post-reading
Discussion: If you were a UN Goodwill Ambassador, what would you do to help people in need?

Step 5. Conclusion
